WFH!

Old World Meets New - ‘The Office’

September 2020

  • WFH (work from home) or WTF?

  • Who is the future of work?

  • How can the workplace support and nurture human community?

In a sea of desks, a woman typed away, filled projects that weren’t her own, and answered calls for an important man sitting in a private room next to many other women doing the same job for other important men. For us, the future of work is female but not as it’s depicted here. In fact this traditional workplace archetype sets the stage for how design has the ability to set toxic power hierarchies in workplace settings. More so it shows us how important it is for us to create spaces that no longer follow this ancient prescription but create spaces that promote collaboration and togetherness on an equal playing field, regardless of gender, status and position.
In an age where we are all working from home we need to think about how work, for many of us, was our social life, as sad as this is to say. How can we be both “Online” and “Offline” but still united and fulfilled?

The MILK Bar

Christina Tosi at Home

January 2021

Founder of the dessert empire, Milk Bar, Christina Tosi has been described as, low brow, a uniquely American chef, and a superhero in the kitchen. Her office isn’t a forgotten closet-turned-workspace at the back of a restaurant, but rather the kitchen she grew up learning to bake in alongside her Mother.

“My Mom’s Mom, my joke with her is that I could make the same exact recipe standing right next to her and somehow hers ALWAYS turned out better. ... My Grandmas, my Aunts, my Mom, they all baked. They baked everyday, never anything fancy. Baking to have a fresh baked good or baking to give to someone, or to bring when you go out. It was just the way it was in life!”

This nostalgic, nothing fancy but absolutely comforting and homey recollection of her childhood in Virginia is seen here in every mis-matched bowl, on every cluttered surface, behind each ornate kitchen cabinet and in every photograph and drawing stuck to the fridge. It’s home.
